Congratulations to Lauryn on the publication of her excellent first-authored paper in JGR-Oceans, “Two Lateral Stirring Regimes in the Northeast Pacific”. This paper is based on her MSc thesis work, and compares the statistics of lateral stirring in the Northeast Pacific using both glider data and a high-resolution ocean model. The paper finds that there are two regimes of stirring, one near the coast and strongly influenced by the Calfornia Undercurrent, and the other offshore where stirring seems sporadic and more influenced by mesoscale eddies. The paper also finds that the model has difficulties replicating the smaller scale stirring statistics, indicating the need for better submesoscale parameterizations.

The paper is open access, and can be found here.
